WHAT'S NEW AT KULANA:

author/editor/filmmaker Cristina Salat's home-for-creative-folk

?!

There's a new species of human creating this world

...and

"WE ARE IT !" (Eckart Tolle)

UPDATE Summer 2010!

You know how you can make one decision that then takes on a life of it's own & whirlpools you towards all kinds of future galaxies?

Well, that's what's happening at Kulana these days!

Too busy to write much now, so this is just a brief aloha to say: our wonderful resident organic food grower Carl (see below) actually wound up staying in the Goddess cabin for 3+ years, but that cabin will become available as of mid-July 2010 (though new folks already applying for residency get first dibs if that's the space they prefer!)

Meanwhile there's a whole lot else new too, including decisions being made about the creation of entirely new spaces...so stay tuned! More once the dust-of-change settles !

Huge thanks to our recent planters of poha berries & deck stainers & singers & volcano storytellers & massage therapists & inner sanctum healers & weedeatters & pond lilly transplanters & pig fence builders & filmmakers! It has been a total joy living this intimate version of creative community with you. :)

With warmest blessings,

Cristina, Kulana's Founder

UPDATE Spring 2010

Aloha--it's Spring!!   :)

If you've been hankering for some time --or a whole new life!!-- at the artist sanctuary & in Hawaii, now is a great time to contact us...Wanted to let everybody know, the Goddess cabin (with its private deck, private parking, two phone line hook-ups, etc.) will be opening up again after 2+ years of having the same wonderful resident in it...& thus will be available to welcome its next special occupant(s) soon!   :)

Our rates still holding steady at $15-40/night/visitor; $450/month/resident... & we're always happy for personal referrals...!

(Just FYI, for those who don't know, the way we work is that each reservation holds "an" available private space--not a specific space--which may be a cabin or may be a room--each of which has its own special quirks & perks--depending upon what's available upon arrival. A person can then either keep their initial space for the entire time they are here, or if another one opens up that they like better, they can switch spaces, on a seniority-priority basis...In other words, whoever's here the longest gets first choice as spaces open up...though usually those here for some time are already IN the space they most prefer!)

Meanwhile, hope you've survived winter & this crazy time on planet earth with heart, mind, body & spirit in tact?! We've been doing a good deal of recharging on this end to keep in balance...swimming with sea turtles, making new friends, hiking lush valleys & mountains, painting, singing, sanctifying the meditation trails...along with putting energy into the continued manifestation of our dreams.

Warm hugs from the Big Island till we meet/meet again-- :)

Happy 2010!

"We arrived ready to camp but the rain pushed us into the coziest cabin! We found a lot of clarity here! It felt great to work the land and to wake up to the warm sun shining through the cabin window. The peacefulness and balance of the rainforest ecosystems all around us made our own communication skills and ability to work together even stronger!"

This year, here at Kulana, we are focussing on...

...forward evolutionary momentum

balanced with nurturing quietude!

Fall 2009

Aloha!!!

Can you BELIEVE it is time for another calendar year already?!!!

Cristina just got back from a trip of movie meetings in hot, dry L.A., and before you ask when it'll be at your local theater, please know the response has been very exciting, and everything will depend on exactly how long or how short it takes to get the right Hollywood "home-team" in place!

(In general, the process of movies being born is actually quite similar to how a book or magazine piece makes it to print, so those of you familiar with Cristina's life as an author already know how the processes of effective writing, finding the right home for a project, negotiating sale terms, production, promotion, etc. works!)

Patience is indeed a virtue for all long-term creative adventures, along with excellent work and the flurries of connection, communication, synergy!!!)

Other Kulana residents and visitors have been busy as well, and we are currently sharing harvests of yummyness--group dinners & desserts of chayote, rainbow chard, vibrant spiral-centered beets, kale, chives, our first potato--plus impromtu poetry readings, flower pot painting, sewing project show & tells, etc.

And in between, we are catching our breath, making order, savoring quiet and unscheduled time with friends & sweeties & ourselves.

It feels GREAT to live in Hawaii--the calm beauty & pace, the wonderful people we daily do "creative community" with, the feeling of home and satisfaction in ALL that's been created here so far--and for those of us who traveled recently, it also can feel great to be "out there" enjoying the hustle & bustle (for brief stretches of time, anyway!)

Gotta say, this era of calm, fun, forward movement brings satisfaction equal or greater to the experience of persevering as our sanctuary for artists--which was once just a "dream"--lives and breathes in its current tangible, enjoyable form!

Cristina, Kulana's Founder, will probably be heading for L.A. again sometime next year...(and would be delighted to make the acquaintance of any friendly faces there, in "the business" or not!)

Meanwhile, further adventures with independent film may also be part of 2010.

Though she's not up to organizing more full-fledged filmmaker "bootcamps" right now, she has been thinking about taking on one or two creative cohorts from time to time in the movement towards completing various fun independent projects (short films with "teeth"!) already underway.

And, as always, she's happy to work with folks freelance on writing projects or films, schedule permitting. ( Further info available at: www.cristinasalat.com)

Meanwhile, thanks for holding & sharing happy visions with us over the years, and we'd love to hear what dreams are currently unfolding for you!

What magic is afoot in your life?????

Wishing you: good people, good dreams, shared fun, and win-win doors blowing open wide in 2010!

On other practical fronts: the bus system here is expanding!

There are now several (free) buses to & from Hilo a day, plus service to local beaches and other areas of the island including Kona, Honokaa, Pahala, Waimea, Pahoa! Whoo hoo!

Several of us just shared a fun bus adventure checking things out (with rolling backpacks in tow for whatever items might want to be brought home with us from local farmers markets, crystal & book stores, etc.!)

Also, the state of Hawaii is raising its Transitory Accommodations tax as of July 1 st , 2010 to 9.25% (it's currently 8.25%), so this TA tax plus the regular 4.167% GE tax will be added into all Kulana reservations the next time you visit. (As always, we're happy to accept checks, cash, traveler's checks, or money orders for reservations. Sorry, no credit card or Pay Pal payments at this time.)

INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS BOOTCAMP

Offered from time to time, Cristina's schedule permitting!

Collaborating on scripts, acting, directing, being creative with lighting & sound, shooting a variety of projects from dramas to docs, creating original music & sets, editing, producing & promoting...learning...sharing skills & tools...birthing finished "products" into the world...and building a portfolio of produced work, all while enjoying the magic that Pele's home island has to offer!

The Bootcamp includes immersion in the above in month-long chunks, whenever Cristina is available to offer them.

Host location varies, as does our filming which occurs island-wide to make use of the island's dramatic locations: tropical black, white & green-sand beaches, molten lava beds & smoking craters, Planet-of-The-Ape-type jungles, and snow-covered mountain peaks!

Emerging and established filmmakers welcome!

Experience a plus, but not as important as enthusiastic stick-to-it-iveness!

Long-term bootcampers in good standing also eligible for paid film positions as they arise!

Accommodations at our creative home sometimes available! All guidelines apply!

We have thus far created, both in California & in Hawaii, a variety of "shorts" from script through to film festival, internet, and theater submission as well as preparing scripts for Hollywood productions. As a solid, compatible core of committed filmmakers forms, we may eventually birth independent feature films here in Hawaii as well.

NOTE: In order to minimize scheduling conflicts, bootcampers welcome to jump on board whenever their calendars allow by reserving 4 week-long chunks of bootcamp experience (not necessarily at the beginning of a month) whenever Cristina is on island and offering them. Bootcampers enjoy an ever-evolving schedule and rotation of filmmakers; at any given time there may be two or twelve of us working on various projects!

To see clips of current Shark Productions work, plus latest updates on bootcamps, go to: www.sharkproductions.biz.

For further information & application, contact Cristina: 808-985-9055.

Update 1/2010:

Official "bootcamps" on hiatus for the foreseeable future.

Cristina may work from time to time with one or two individuals on the completion of independent shorts "with teeth" already underway. Contact her re: scheduling & fees, if interested!
